I Hate Petunias but Drew One Anyway

Greetings, readers of the future! I speak to you from Monday, defying the laws of time and space. At the moment of this posting, I am attending a painting class out of town.

You would think that doing a sketch every day would improve my skills, but it doesn’t seem to be happening.

A great deal of this has to do with my lack of skill. Add to that a set of the worst colored pencils in existence and a really unhelpful how-to book, and things just aren’t going to work. I stick with them both, because it’s wasteful spending not to…and I am gleaning some good tips on shading.

The shading today is much better than yesterday as is the center. The photo makes it look like there’s a sense of depth/dimension, which I didn’t see on the in-person sketch.

I am not happy with the veins. To be fair, I was in a hurry which, of course, is strike one. And I didn’t bother to sharpen the pencil (it would just break, anyway), which is strike two.
